On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hairWarm smell of colitas, rising up through the airUp ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering lightMy head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
The Eagles' best-known recording is broadly present across the global charts today, appearing on 229 country and platform charts as the album approaches its 50th anniversary. The song that titled the band's 1976 LP runs nearly six and a half minutes, built on a reggae-inflected guitar figure and the twin-lead solo from Don Felder and Joe Walsh that closes it — a structure radio never edited and listeners never tired of. The album earned two US number-one singles and remains a fixture of the band's catalog; Classic Rock marks the half-century milestone in its current issue. A 40th-anniversary deluxe edition, per Wikipedia, paired the remaster with a 1976 Forum concert recorded weeks before release. Few mid-70s rock records have stayed this durable.
