The lead single from Adele's 21 is broadly present across the global charts today, appearing on 63 country and platform charts after a seven-week lull. Written with Paul Epworth and described by the singer as a "dark blues-y gospel disco tune", it was her first US number one, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks and helping push 21 to a record 24-week run atop the Billboard 200. The track first broke through partly on the strength of its use in a trailer for I Am Number Four, later becoming a fixture of Adele's live encores. Fifteen years on, its stomp-and-clap architecture remains the blueprint for how a breakup song scales to stadium size.
